ESDU: Exploring Solutions, Defying Uncertainties

The Environmental Sustainability Development Unit (ESDU) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) champions community-led development, resilient food systems, and inclusive growth— bridging academia and the field.

Foreword

Messages from AUB Leadership

Fadlo R. Khuri, MD
President
American University of Beirut

For twenty-five years, the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit has stood as one of AUB's clearest expressions of purpose: knowledge in service of society. Founded on the belief that development must be rooted in dignity and local agency, ESDU has woven academic rigor with field-based practice to uplift rural communities across Lebanon and the region. Its guiding Motto 'Keepers of the Land' reminds us that sustainability is not a slogan, but a responsibility shared across generations.

What began in 1996 as a small but ambitious set of community-focused initiatives in the Arsal region of Lebanon has grown into a regional leader in applied research and community-driven development. Today, ESDU's work in agroecology, rural livelihoods, food systems, and climate adaptation has produced evidence-based tools and policy insights that continue to inform national and regional programming. Its Master's programs in Rural Community Development and Food Security have become benchmarks for training practitioners, scholars, and policymakers.

The impact of this work is both measurable and inspiring. Over the past 25 years, ESDU has secured more than USD 15 million in competitive grants, implemented 70 projects, strengthened 100,000 livelihoods, and empowered more than 12,000 women as true Keepers of the Land. Its contributions have garnered international recognition, including twelve major awards, while producing 170 publications that have advanced knowledge and practice across multiple fields.

These achievements take on even greater meaning when viewed against the backdrop of Lebanon's recent crises. In times of war, economic collapse, the Beirut port explosion, and multiple displacement waves, ESDU has consistently stepped forward to support cooperatives, municipalities, and small-scale producers. Its rapid interventions have helped restore agricultural activity, stabilize fragile food systems, and reinforce community resilience when national capacities were under unprecedented strain.

ESDU's leadership has also transcended national borders. Through strategic partnerships with institutions such as the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and through its regional platform, Karianet, the Unit has stimulated knowledge exchange and strengthened development practice across the Arab region.

As ESDU marks this 25-year milestone, we honor not only its past achievements but the enduring mission and vision that drives its work.

Ammar Olabi, PhD
Dean, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences
American University of Beirut

Twenty-five years after its establishment, the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit stands as a cornerstone within the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and as one of its defining pillars. Its evolution reflects more than programmatic growth; it reflects the steady progress of a Faculty committed to shaping sustainable food systems and resilient rural economies.

From a Faculty perspective, ESDU has sharpened our academic leadership. It has firmly embedded the connection between research and field practice, ensuring that our work consistently addresses real-world challenges while upholding the highest standards of scientific rigor. Through this approach, our graduate programs have gained greater clarity, stronger professional alignment, and closer ties to the communities and institutions they serve.

ESDU has also expanded the Faculty's strategic footprint. By building partnerships across Lebanon and the region, engaging actively with municipalities and cooperatives, and contributing substantively to policy dialogue, it has further reinforced FAFS's leadership in agroecology, climate resilience, rural livelihoods, and sustainable food systems. Its efforts have broadened our networks and enhanced the Faculty's regional presence.

Equally important is the academic culture it has helped nurture; one that values applied research, mentorship, and engagement as integral components of excellence. Our students and young professionals benefit from exposure to field realities, collaborative problem-solving, and the kind of grounded experience that shapes responsible leadership. In this way, ESDU has not only implemented projects; it has contributed to the formation of a new generation of practitioners and scholars.

Looking ahead, ESDU's work in digital innovation, climate adaptation, and systems-based thinking will remain central to the Faculty's strategic priorities. The next chapter will require agility across disciplines, wider regional connectivity, and sustained commitment to evidence-driven solutions that respond to evolving food system challenges.
